Tips to avoid dry skin this winter

Jean Ahn

Hello everyone!

Now that its January and the temps have really cooled down… I’m talking snow storms 😂my skin always freaks out with the weather change! Anyone else feel the same?! The past two years, when I got serious about my skincare ( I wish I had started a bit sooner) I made sure to switch up my products for winter.

The second super cold weather hits, my skin gets so incredibly dry and flakey! It’s so frustrating to deal with this every year but after some experimenting I found a routine and products to help combat your dry skin this winter!

  • First and foremost, find a good exfoliating cleanser that takes off all the dry skin! It’s essential to have a good exfoliator, it helps keep your skin hydrated and healthy. According to Dr. Marnie Nussbaum, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, "Exfoliation is the removal of the skin’s outer most layer, which consists of dead skin cells. It increases the rate of your skin regeneration process to improve tone and texture." I like to use this one! Each time I use this one I see and feel dead skin literally fall off my face!

  • In addition to a good exfoliator, a gentle cleanser is very necessary. I have been using the Indie Lee Brightening cleanser for about 8 months now and absolutely love it! I’ve mentioned it in this post, but it takes off all my makeup and super gentle plus it smells soo good! I can’t recommend this enough!

  • I have tried a slew of different products to combat by dry, flaky skin and the one thing that always seems to work for me is rose hip oil! This $16 bottle of Rose Hip Oil has done wonders for me this season! Apply a nickel size of oil and massage into your face and neck at night. This should be the last step in your skincare routine.

  • I’m also a huge fan of sleep masks! I like Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Sleep Mask ( which I’ve talked about in this post and this post ) and I like the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask.

  • Also, a good moisturizer is crucial! I have always had a tough time finding a moisturizer that wasn’t too greasy or oily. I like Clinique’s moisture surge 72 hour replenishing moisturizer its super light and keeps your skin dewey all season long! If your skin is feeling super dry, try this overnight mask, you’ll wake up the next morning with smooth skin!

  • Another important element to preventing dry skin is to not take super hot showers or wash your face with super hot water. I know its so tempting in the winter but the hot water strips your skin of moisture which is vital to withstand the cold winter weather.

  • In addition to dry skin, I always dealt with dry, peeling lips! I struggled with this for years every single winter and tried so many different balms and chapsticks but they never worked, until I started using Fresh Sugar lip exfoliator and the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask! It’s the best $20 I ever spent and its still pretty full from purchasing a year ago! They have no introduced a ton of different scents, so if you’re curious, try out this holiday kit it also makes the perfect gift too!

I realize everyone’s skin is different, but I wanted to share some products and tips that have worked for me. Another important element that will help with combating dry skin is staying hydrated! Drinking lots of water also helps with leaving your skin dewey and moisturized. I always have this chic water bottle with me and keeps my water ice cold!
